Obtaining and Trusting in Freedom
February 2019
In The House of Mirth, Edith Wharton writes the character Gerty Farish as the representation of freedom in order to influence Lily’s motives in the novel with the ultimate goal of showing the women of Wharton’s time that freedom from society’s constraints is an obtainable option that they can trust.
Reimagining Family in Beloved
October 2019
Beloved reimagines the idea of family in the way that Paul D's joining of this family does not affect any problems the novel presents and by helping Sethe realize her identity as a free woman. In these ways, Paul D reveals the true fundamental problem affecting black Americans: how slavery has affected how black Americans identify themselves.
